I meet a lot of people who tell me that they have no clue why they don't have great credit, they don't have any credit cards or loans and they pay their bills on time!
Credit scores measure how well you pay your credit-related obligations, not your non-credit ones. Although there are some companies that will allow you to report your utility bills, rent, etc. on average, if you are not paying on a credit card (even if you don't carry a balance) or a loan of some sort, your credit scores will not be that great.
If you want great credit scores, you have to use credit.
